Central Valley
Turning point of the Country, the Central Valley offers a wide variety of tourist attractions. Nature and culture are sure to charm the visitor. The most beautiful museums of the Country have their place : Gold Museum, Jade Museum, National Museum, Costa Rican Art Museum La Salle Natural Sciences Museum, University of Costa Rica Insect Museum, Art and Design Museum, Children Museum, to only name a few. It is also in the Central Valley that you will find the architectural pearl so cherished by the Costa Ricans: the National Theatre. All these monuments are located in the Capital City, San José. The National Parks of the Central Valley protect the principal volcanoes of the region, like the Poás, the Braulio Carrillo, the Irazú and the Turrialba. All very available by road, these volcanoes transform themselves in a magnificent theatre of nature for the observation of birds, scenery, craters and forests.
Most of the public services are concentrated in San José, however, the other centers of importance like Alajuela, Heredia and Cartago hold many commercial services and tourist infrastructures of quality. The tourist region of the Central Valley is composed of two magnificent sectors that, by themselves, have become sought out tourist destinations: Turrialba and the Valley of the Saints (Valle de los Santos). The villages keep their charm along with well preserved houses built the old way (mixture of hay, clay and manure), big coffee haciendas, their "trapiches" (sugar mills) and milk farms.
