South Pacific
The South Pacific region is composed of two sectors: on one part, the whole coastal line from Dominical up North all the way to Punta Burica, at the extreme South of the Country, the other sector, the high interior mountains belong principally to the Talamanca mountain range. Well known for its biological diversity, its natural beauty and the richness of the landscape, this region holds many treasures of natural and tourism importance. The big picture is a marvel for the amateurs of mountain hiking (the highest peaks of Costa Rica), horseback riding, white water rafting, sport fishing and scuba diving. Bird watchers and nature lovers will also find everything they need for the flora and fauna species is one of the most abundant in the World. You can find whales, Macaws and whole families of tití monkeys, endemic to the Pacific central and meridian coast.
The South Pacific becomes the ideal tourist region for adventure and ecotourism seekers. This very contrasted region allows you to fully take in the beaches with thick and luxurious rainforest vegetation, and also highlights where low temperature assure certain ecosystems and geological formations unique to Costa Rica. The Rivers and waterfalls also offer splendid sceneries. The two big protected areas of the South Pacific region are the Corcovado National Park, described by National Geographic as "the richest biological place on the Planet", and the Biosphere Reserve, inside the La Amistad International Park.
