The North
The protected areas of the northern region of the Country assured an important ecotourism outburst. Lakes, Laguna's, volcanoes, rivers and waterfalls enable the visitor to fully appreciate the charms this particular nature has to offer. Characterised by important rainfall, this region possesses fertile plains and very humid forests of everlasting green vegetation, thus permitting the aquatic birds, reptiles, mammals and the prehistorically renowned short-nosed gar, a natural sanctuary of premier choice for observers of the wild.
The rivers that cross the region, like the ones of Peñas Blancas, San Carlos, Toro, Puerto Viejo and Sarapiquí, constitute magnificent observation platforms for small boat adventurers. Some of these rivers are highly estimated and appreciated for navigation. This is the Canton of Sarapiquí, recognised as a research site for scientists for its rich biodiversity; it also constitutes the last refuge for endangered species like the Lapa Verde (Great Green Macaw). Finally, the typical holidays and special events of the villages in this region are famous for their rodeo and of course the famous animal wholesale.
