General Information

Heritage & culture

The Costa Rican culture is a mixture of races that peacefully coexist in the country. The principal influence is European, present in its official language -Spanish- and also in the architecture of churches and other historical buildings. The indigenous influence is less visible, but is present in the tortillas that are so typical in Costa Rican food and also in their hand made ceramics sold along the roads.

The most recent influence comes from the USA, in many ways, from the movie theaters in San José up to the fast food chains that are taking over the major cities. An important aspect of the Costa Rican cultural heritage is their great love for peace and democracy. The Costa Ricans like to point out that their nation is the exception in Latin America, because for a long time now, democracy has dominated the politics of the country, instead of dictators.

The Costa Ricans are proud of this century long democratic tradition and the absence of an army. This institution was abolished in 1948, and the spare budget has been invested in a better way of life for their citizens, which in turn favored social peace and harmony that makes Costa Rica a fun place to visit.
