Ethical Code for responsible tourism
Think about who gets your money; be honest and realist on your spending. Try to leave economic fallout in the hands of Costa Ricans and indigenous communities. As a consumer, you should privilege local drinks and restaurants; try to encourage local hotels or farmers while you travel about Costa Rica.
You can bargain with humour and not be aggressive; pay what you think is worth a reasonable price to you and remember that your buying power is way more than they imagine. Think about what they do with your trash; try, whenever possible, not to leave any contaminants; be sensible about the use of certain resources (electricity, air conditioning, water, etc.). Contribute to the preservation of the local fauna and flora by respecting the laws and regulations of Costa Rica. Stay on the designed paths; don't collect flowers, seeds, plants or insects. When you scuba dive or snorkel, avoid touching or standing on the reefs and don't collect anything on beaches. Open your spirit to new cultures and traditions; this will transform your experience. Think well on what you wear and how you behave yourself, you will only be more respected by the Costa Ricans. Don't treat the people as if they were part of the scenery; they don't always want to be photographed, please ask for their permission first.
